The Sugar Path is our second vendor to be featured in this new series! We are so happy that one of the owners, Michelle, took some time out of her busy schedule to speak with us and even let us come to her shop to take some photos!
Michelle co-owns The Sugar Path with her sister, Nina. They have been in business since 2011 and do approximately 250 weddings each year.
Michelle started baking cakes for her kids’ birthday parties and eventually people started asking her to bake for them. She has always been a foodie and grew up in her grandma’s kitchen. Nina joined her on the journey (their sugar path?) of learning the science of baking and the two of them began to create their own recipes. The self-taught sisters wanted to see where their baking could take them. They started selling their baked goods at farmer’s markets while still working full-time jobs and raising their families. As their hobby turned into a business the sisters made the decision to continue to grow and open a storefront.
“We started The Sugar Path because we love food; because we know that traditions can be centered around a family table and special food; and because we want to add value in this world by helping to create beautiful memories such as those we have been blessed to have.
In 2012, Michelle and Nina opened The Sugar Path, located in the quaint downtown area of Geneva, IL!
It is clear with every bite that they love what they do and are passionate about their products. You are immediately greeted with a smile upon entering the front door; they adore their customers and genuinely enjoy talking to people.
“It’s amazing to be in this business that we have worked so hard to create and be able to help people experience wonderful memories through dessert.
Michelle truly enjoys every part of what she does, however, as the business grows so has her role. She used to bake everything that would come out of the kitchen, but now her focus is on the business side.
“I love marketing our business because I am so passionate about it!
Michelle describes those at The Sugar Path as idea people—someone is always saying, “I have an idea!” They are excited about the potential of their business and are even looking forward to some changes to the storefront. The kitchen will be expanded behind the store, new floors will be installed and there will even be a window for visitors to look through and see the decorating station! Who isn’t amazed at watching the delicate swirl of frosting as it is put on a cupcake?! Michelle is also excited to announce that they will soon be offering cake and pie shakes. YUM!
Michelle has some advice for when brides and grooms begin picking out their cake, treats, etc:
“Picking out your wedding dessert is often the best part of wedding planning! Have fun with it!
She says that it is a time to sample with no boundaries and to explore all your dessert options. You and your baker should create a good bridge of communication so make sure that the baker is nice to work with! The Sugar Path always meets with their couples for a tasting and then provides them with options so they can choose what will work for their budget.
“Bring your ideas to the tasting, but if you need help selecting a style your baker is there to help and make the process easier! Keep your mind open to flavor suggestions—you may find something new you’ll fall in love with (hint: CHURRO)!
